Peugeot 206 GTi 180

The Peugeot 206 GTi had a tough act to follow, we all know that, and it’s probably fair to say that Peugeot missed the mark with the original 206 GTi, 140bhp in a bigger, heavier car just didn’t quite cut it compared to its light and nimble predecessor. In 2003 the GTi 180 came along with more power, and larger wheels among other things, looking to remedy the situation.

That’s exactly what we have here, a 206 GTi 180 finished in Aden Red, registered on 1^st September 2004 by Hamble Motors Peugeot in Southampton, and supplied to Mr J & Mrs B Hallum. 1^st September 2004 was also the first day of the ’54 plate’ and the Hallums had pre-purchased a private registration plate with their initials to go on their new GTi – JH54BLH – a plate that it still wears today.

The originality of this car is evidenced by the fact that those number plates are the very ones printed in 2004, baring the Hamble Motors logo and matching the rear window sticker and tax disc holder which both remain. In 2012 the car was sold to a Mr. Jolly, who kept it until 2014. And that’s it, its been with the current owner since 2014 as part of a collection which included other Peugeot GTi models, and is now for sale once more.

Having covered just 1000 miles per year over the last decade, it’ll come as no surprise that this 206 is in wonderful condition for its age, both inside and out. Mechanically, the car was treated to a significant overhaul in 2023 at 62,500 miles. This overhaul included a service, cam belt, new brakes front & rear, brake fluid and four new tyres, as well as a few little jobs such as mending the horn.

Thanks to the recent overhaul, this car wants for nothing other than possibly a new set of floor mats if you plan to keep it perfect, the drivers mat showing the usual signs of wear.

Driving this 206 GTi 180 is a lovely experience, small hatchbacks with large capacity engines have character that modern turbo-charged smaller capacity cars don’t have, this thing pulls beautifully through all gears, with no knocks, rattles or squeaks. The big sports seats are very comfortable, the 206 definitely lending itself as a car you could happily do plenty of miles in, but it’s superior condition means it would also slot into an a collection easily.
