Volkswagen Golf GTI 16v

We are excited to offer for sale this collector-grade Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16v. A three-door ‘Big Bumper’ car and one of, if not the best example to come to the market in recent years thanks to a true nut-and-bolt restoration by the present keeper, an open cheque book to ensure this cult classic is the best it can possibly be.

Effectively a one-owner car, this Golf GTI was purchased new in March 1992 from Karman Volkswagen in Barnet by a young man, who had to register the car in his mother’s name for insurance purposes, with the registration being swapped over in May 1996, presumably when he was able to obtain insurance of his own – we’ve all been there!

Something tells us the insurance company had nothing to worry about, as this enthusiastic and fastidious young owner had the foresight to keep absolutely everything, wise beyond his years. The file which accompanies this car contains the original sales order form, original certificate of insurance (with his Mother as the main driver), factory build sheet, every tax disc, every MOT certificate, invoices for services and other maintenance throughout his ownership, the full set of owners manuals and stamped service booklet, two keys – you get the idea.

An account in the file from the original owner attests to never having had any welding or major paintwork throughout his ownership, the car always kept garaged. A full suite of photos of the car prior to restoration show clearly that it was a solid, well cared for example – an excellent starting point for creating one of the best Mk2s in the country, then.

The present keeper commissioned J-Tech in Reading to carry out every aspect of the restoration, whilst retaining as many of the original components as possible, including paintwork. All of which is logged in the file – hundreds of photographs document every stage of the process and the accompanying invoices give a written account of the work that’s gone into this GTI, as well as the significant expense poured into it for no reason other than to make it as good as, if not better than the day it rolled out of the factory.
