Volkswagen Scirocco GT MkII

It’s impossible to talk about the Volkswagen Scirocco without mentioning the Golf upon which it is based, so let’s get that out of the way early – a bullet-proof cult classic hatchback which has seen values rocket in the last few years. So, the sleeker coupé bodied equivalent surely represents a bargain in comparison, will their values go the same way in the years to come? Time will tell.

We’re firm believers that you should never buy a car purely as an investment – buy it because you love it and enjoy driving it. If the time comes for you to move it on, and you happen to have made a few quid then great, good for you. The important bit here is to buy one you can enjoy to its full potential – and that’s what we have here with this Mk2 Scirocco GT.

Our lovely little Mk2 is a solid example that was subject to significant recommissioning at the hands of a real enthusiast in 2020/21, meaning this VW would sit equally well as part of a wider collection, or as a daily driver for someone who, like us, would love to spice up their morning commute.

The aforementioned recommissioning includes; *deep breath* a full respray, 4 new Kumho tyres, new discs and pads, brake calipers, master cylinder, carburetor, fuel pump, brake lines, fuel lines, exhaust, cambelt, water pump, shock absorbers and springs and ends most recently with a new radiator, major service and MOT in November 2023. That service included oil & filter, air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid and coolant.

There isn’t a wad of invoices to evidence every bit of work that’s gone into it, but a simple viewing will confirm that this car has had plenty of love bestowed upon it. Aside from some common cracking on the dashboard and a small tear in the headlining this Scirocco presents extremely well for a car fast approaching the big 40, when it’ll be eligible for ‘Historic’ taxation status, exempting it from Road Tax, MOT and even ULEZ charges.

Driving our Scirocco underlines its quality further, it goes well, steers well and stops well. Importantly, the driving experience is also totally smoke-free.

Accompanying the car is the original owner’s manual, including the service booklet which shows a few stamps in the early years including a PDI & delivery to a Mr. P. Sheppard by South Hereford Garages in Malvern, Worcestershire. Mr. Sheppard must have had a crystal ball to know that non-sunroof cars would be more desirable in the future, his choice of Tornado Red paint looks great and the period-correct Panasonic radio cassette pleasingly remains, in working order, too.
